An annual review of Polish production output in the field of animated film? The most interesting film productions by professionals, amateurs and independent directors? You’ve guessed! The National Original Animated Film Festival (OFAFA) has had it with winter – it’s returning this year in spring (11-13 March 2010).
The National Original Animated Film Festival (OFAFA) has taken place in Kraków since 1993. It is the only event in Poland to concentrate exclusively on original made-in-Poland animation. At the same time it enables the discovery of new talents among non-professional directors and blazes a trail for the world of professional filmmaking.
At this Kraków festival, original Polish productions created from 2008 to 2010, using any number of animation techniques (drawings, cut-outs, plasticine, puppets, computer animation etc.), are entered for a competition. Professionals compete for Gold, Silver and Bronze Lines. Animations by students from higher film and art schools will be competing for the Grand Prix, Special Prize and a Jury Prize and films by non-professionals will be honoured with the Main Prize and a Jury Prize. Heading this year’s jury will be an eminent creator of Polish animation and highly respected teacher of the next generations, Jerzy Kucia.
During the 15th edition of the festival, we’ll be encountering the greatest creators of Polish animation – reviews of both the output of masters and classics have been prepared. Moreover, the festival will be screening a selection of original gala films to mark the 30th anniversary of the Poznań Animated Film Television Studio. For those interested in what is being created abroad – this year, as part of a three-part overview, we can discover the latest Russian and Czech animations. OFAFA also hasn’t forgotten about the youngest viewers – a separate block will be devoted to special screenings for children. Also of interest is the addition of a separate section, Salon Odrzuconych (Salon of the Rejected), where titles can be encountered that didn’t manage to qualify for the competition.
OFAFA is not only about film screenings – for those craving discussion, a discussion forum, Wokół polskiej animacji (Around Polish Animation), with directors from all over the world participating, and also an ASIFA-Poland (International Animated Film Society) convention have been organised. During the course of the festival it will also be possible to remind ourselves of previous editions – the OFAFA 1993-2010 exhibition, as its name suggests, will be presenting all the art projects and graphic art events from previous years.
The screenings will be taken place at Kraków’s Wrzos Cinema and Theatre and in the Lokator club. The festival organisers are: the Polish Filmmakers’ Association, the Polish Institute of Film Art, the Podgórze Cultural Centre, the Wrzos Cinema and Theatre and the Klatka Film Club.
Where is Polish animated film heading? What inspires young directors? What is the contemporary perspective on the history of animation? OFAFA will certainly tell you! (bb)
