Gold Breeds Gold - March at Alchemia
Publication date: 2010-02-01
9, 17, 24, 27 March 2010
Every sportsperson dreams of that disc made of the most valuable of precious metals. But the medals at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver have already been handed out. All that remains is the recipe for alchemist’s gold. It turns out to be simple: carefully selected free jazz of the highest order with an alloy of alternative ingredients.
In March free jazz will rule in the Alchemia club. And that of the highest level. In the catacombs, masters of the Chicago school and the greatest names in young Polish jazz will be enchanting us with their sounds. On 9 March a trio under the leadership of Michael Zerang will be presenting themselves. This percussionist of Assyrian descent is very active in the improvised music field. On three occasions he has won the prestigious Joseph Jefferson Award for original musical theatre compositions (1996, 1998 and 2000).
Next, on 17 March, Four will be presenting themselves. This quartet proves that in music there are no boundaries. The Americans Dave Rempis (saxophone) and Tim Daisy (percussion) are extraordinarily strong pillars on which, as a matter of fact, any jazz musician could base his/her group’s conception. The Poznanian clarinetist Wacław Zimpel has taken international concert halls by storm. The line-up is completed by Ukrainian double bassist Mark Tokar.
Mikołaj Trzaska and Raphael Rogiński will be appearing on 25 March. There is no need to recommend Gdańsk-based Mikołaj Trzaska. Enough to mention that he was the leader or co-founder of such groups as Miłość, Łoskot, The Users and NRD.
This month in the Kazimierz club the alternative to jazz is… alternative. On 24 March, a special club-based part of the Mysłowice OFF Festival will be taking part in Alchemia. Fans of alternative music, in particular were electrified by the news of the visit of the American group, Mount Eerie. Actually hiding behind this name is a single person – Phil Elverum, a cult figure for many. This superb producer and multi-instrumentalist in 1997 founded The Microphones, one of the most original contemporary alternative music projects. Supporting Phil will be avant-pop Canadian trio, No Kids and the Americans from Chain And The Gang.
And so, have you found something for yourselves? I guarantee that this is not all that the “alchemists” at Alchemia have prepared for us in March.
