15th Summer Jazz Festival at the Piwnica Pod Baranami
Publication date: 2010-07-06
4 July – 18 August 2010
Summer Jazz Capital
The beginning of July, the holiday period, is not usually associated with a mass of cultural events. But Kraków is the exception to the rule. The city at this time of the year is positively jumping: focussing on the concerts in the Summer Jazz Festival alone, a few big events can be singled out.
Its full name is actually the Summer Jazz Festival at Piwnica Pod Baranami (Cellar under Rams) – for this is way it was conceived over a dozen years ago by the main organiser and spiritus movens of the festival, Witold Wnuk: to gather together representatives of the Polish jazz scene for a series of concerts lasting the whole of July at this home of cult cabaret, to display the traditions and contemporary aspect of this music and also to present the Jazz Ram award for lifetime achievement: back then, in the meagre 1990s, it was a signal to the world: we’re still alive! As the years went by, the festival quickly grew: it took over concert halls and the city’s open spaces and some of the world’s greatest stars appeared at it: today it is one of the most important jazz events in Poland and the largest festival presenting the output of Polish musicians.
This year the festival again surprises: the jubilee 15th edition lasts until 18 August – and there’ll be an impressive finale: with Bobby McFerrin accompanied by the NDR Big Band – well remembered in Kraków for their fantastic performers last year – and a programme specially prepared for the jubilee year – featuring the music of Chopin. Appearing earlier – on 1 August – is a fantastically talented trumpeter and composer drawing inspiration from the most diverse areas of music: Markus Stockhausen, son of the great Karlheinz. Just because it would appear that the festival’s international stars will be arriving in Kraków in August – that doesn’t mean that a potent dose of musical experiences won’t be awaiting us in July.
The festival begins on 4 July just like in previous years with a colourful New Orleans parade traversing the historical city centre and reminding us that Kraków has been the Polish hub of traditional jazz for half a century. The very next day the Śmietana – Karolak – Czerwiński Trio will be inaugurating the daily concerts in Cellar under Rams. Over the following 6 days scores of musicians, including the crème de la crème of Polish jazz and many foreign guests, will be stepping out onto the stage. It would be difficult to list all the names, but one thing is certain: emotions and a full palette featuring all types of jazz – are guaranteed.
This is “Adzik” Sendecki’s time – says Witold Wnuk – and it’s difficult not to concede this point to him. Indeed: this great jazz piano talent remained in the shadows for years, albeit in the shadow of the giants who invited him to collaborate on recordings: Jaco Pastorius, Marcus Miller, Mike Oldfield... yet it now turns out that at festival performances it was his solos that were the most rapturously applauded part of the concerts. His name only really became well known in recent years, when he settled in Hamburg after a long sojourn in the USA. Today he is regarded as one of the five best jazz pianists in the world and his new disc – Solo Piano at Schloss Elmau (2010) – should present him with the chance to further close in on this elite group… so it’s unsurprising that this year’s festival has become something of a tribute to this superb musician: he’ll be appearing several times, including a solo performance in the Manggha Museum (9 July) and also with Marek Bałata and in the aforementioned concerts of Markus Stockhausen and Bobby McFerrin.
It’s also worth mentioning that Sendecki is one of the initiators of the My Polish Heart foundation, which from this year will be supporting Polish jazz musicians. (Grzegorz Słącz, monthly "Karnet")
